Myths

Some stuff I've seen written about living in cars that just don't ring true or are just silly suggestions.

Sex lube for shaving.

Oh this has to be the dumbest suggestion I have ever seen. Okay, it probably works for the person who thought it up. But why would you do it? I can understand that people may not want to dry shave. Dry shaving can be quite painful. Now here's a suggestion, use water and soap. You're going to need to use soap to wash anyway. Why would you buy 'sex lube'? Just splash your face with some water, then use either a cake of soap or liquid soap to produce a lather. Or how about using a shaver with a lubrication strip? Do away with the soap all together. Lastly, I have to ask why anyone would bother to spend a couple of dollars on a tiny sachet of 'sex lube' when for the same price you can buy a much larger amount of liquid soap.

Perhaps someone has a little bit of a fixation with 'sex lube'. ;)

Composting toilets.

Who on Earth came up with this idea? Perhaps composting toilets in the US are different than in Australia. As I understand it a composting toilet has a sort of hopper at the bottom. You lift the lid, do your business, and then a fan kicks in blowing air around and composting the shit. You can eventually dig out the shit as it breaks down into dirt or manure.

Oh this is impractical in just so many ways.

For these reasons I doubt that composting toilets make it into many campervans, mobile homes and certainly not cars.

Gym membership for showers.

I see this over and over again. Mostly on US based car living web sites. I guess gym membership in the is a lot cheaper than in Australia. It always seems a pretty expensive way to have a shower. Okay if you are into working out, but if all you are doing is using the shower you're wasting your money.

Freedom and 'the man'.

Lots of people I have spoken with suggest that living in a car or van will make you free, and that you will have less interaction with 'the man'. Well in many ways it does. You can usually drive where you want, park where you want within reason and do what you want within reason. But don't expect to have less interaction with 'the man' or authorities. How many time have you been sitting in a house and the police have come in to do a random breath test? Probably none. In a car or van police have the right to stop you for random breath tests, random drug tests random vehicle inspections and pretty much random anything. Police can also search your vehicle if they like in Australia. Now since I don't drink, don't use drugs and have no criminal record what so ever apart from one parking ticket which I dutifully paid, I have no need to worry about all of that.

I can see though that it might become annoying if it occurred with regularity, especially random searches of your vehicle I've heard anecdotal evidence that such searches are reasonably common in the United States. I presume this is because there are more people there, thus more police, thus more searches. I presume that this is to counter the fact that there are more people, thus more drink drivers and drug users and thus more idiots on the road. Either that or there's just more TV shows that show that sort of thing happening in America.

Living in a vehicle you can expect more stringent vehicle inspections than usual. Some mechanics may also take advantage of your situation by upping the price on repairs to get them done quickly because they know you depend on your vehicle
