Living in a van
A
plain delivery type van can some times be a medium between living in a car
and a camper van These vans are usually pretty cheap to buy, some times cheaper
than cars.
A van will naturally have more interior space than a car. Most vans will have enough space in the back to allow a full length lay down bed. There will usually also be plenty of room for storage. There is no reason why you can not modify most vans to have all of the facilities that a camper van has. It also has the advantage of being able to fit in to most urban areas without standing out.
Advantages:
- A small van can be brought for around $2000 or less in Australia. More for newer ones.
- A small van has good fuel consumption and can be a daily driver.
- It won't look out of place if you can make it look like a delivery van or work van.
- There is lots of space for storage.
- You can fit out the interior how you like. You can have a fridge, sink and stove.
- Can have almost all of the features of a camper van installed.
- With solid walls on the sides, you get a lot more privacy.
- You may get one that allows you to stand up inside.
- High roof height allows for solar panels to be hidden on the roof.
- Easy to park unless it is big.
Disadvantages:
- It will stand out more than a car. But not hugely so.
- It will not come fitted out with amenities like a campervan, you will have to build these yourself. But it will be cheaper than a campervan If you are not good with tools or carpentry, this could be a big job and may cost you more than buying n already fitted out campervan.
- It will be more expensive than a car. But again, not hugely so. You may even get a van cheaper than a car these days.
- It may use more fuel than a car. This is more so if it is big.
- It may be a bit top heavy or tall. Can not go where cars can go sometimes.
- Lack of light inside. But this can be an advantage.
